  2. this generates so many questions! what is he king of? why is he sad? does he have a queen? maybe not-is that why he's sad?

  3. As Picasso said. "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up."

I admire creativity in all its forms. Its a great painting.

  4. What a great picture, Kass. It captures a sort of world-weary wistfulness perfectly. I hope you have custody of it!

  5. Alanna - Glad you like it. Even though I'm his grandmother, it think it's pretty cool.

standing - I've asked Ethan to tell me the story of this painting. I think he's still working on it. He said the red over one eye was a battle scar.

Jay - thanks for the Picasso quote. It's so true. I think it's a pretty great painting too, and I would even if some other child had drawn it.

Dick - World-weary wistfulness - that's perfect. I don't have custody of it. It hangs on his wall in Nebraska. I took this picture of it while I was there over the holidays. I'm going to frame it.

  7. I'm touched that a child so young understands one can be a king, but still sad and battle-scarred. Encourage Ethan's creativity. I know you do!

  9. This is a wonderful painting Kass. I love the way your grandson fills the frame with colour. The king is situated so well within, and it's amazing the way the colours blend and merge. He's quite an artist, your grandson.

You must be proud if him.

I like the Picasso quote from Jay, too, it's so true!

  11. Your grandson's painting transported me immediately to Oscar Wilde's short story: The Happy Prince. I can never read it from start to finish without crying:

  12. Alana - thanks for coming back. I hope you read the story Jonas recommended.

Jonas - You're right. That story is a tear-producer. Thank you so much for the link. I printed it out and I'm going to send it to Ethan, along with all the comments because I want to encourage him. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment and provide that link.

  13. Your grandson is a very good artist, please encourage him to peruse that field!!
The expression of the king's face is deep. I do not see a sad king, I see a kind king who contemplates all angles of life. His green dress talk about peace and harmony, while the purple background talk about hope and healing. ;)

  14. Gabi - thanks for appreciating Ethan's art. I see the symbolism you are talking about with the colors. Isn't it interesting that a child would choose these colors instinctively?

  15. That seems exceptional. Did he "just draw" it or was it set in some way? Whatever, he would seem to have some talent that would be good to nurse.

  16. Kids are much the smartest of fellows...is it watercolour/ink over crayon? Very assertively executed - love the heroic and manly features - the nose of a great king! It's natural to be sad when a king - how can one possibly please all one's subjects? But the king is born to duty - hence straight mouth of determination - and he will lead his people into greatness! Huzzah!
